Iran has rejected remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that the United States could take control of the Strait of Hormuz to guarantee the movement of commercial ships.
Iranian authorities said on August 15 and 16 that the strategically important waterway would remain under Iran’s sovereignty. They also dismissed any attempt by Washington to establish control over the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime passage linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. It is one of the world’s key routes for transporting oil and other energy products to international markets.
The latest exchange comes as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high. Control of the waterway and freedom of navigation through it continue to be major areas of disagreement between the two countries.
